When it comes to pay per click advertising, you will find that
there are a number of pay per click programs that you can choose
from. Two of the most popular programs include Yahoo Search
Marketing and Google Adwords. With both programs coming highly
rated and recommended, you may find it difficult to choose
between the two. When it comes to deciding which pay per click
program is the best for you, you will want to examine the
advantages and disadvantages of each.

For starters, let’s examine the Google Adwords program. Hands
down, the biggest advantage to using Google Adwords is that it
is a well-known and established program. In fact, Google is
considered a household name; everyone knows what it is. When it
comes to pay per click advertising, Google’s Adwords program is
the most recommended. It is also the first program that comes
to mind. This wouldn’t be the case if Google Adwords wasn’t
successful. By choosing Google Adwords, you automatically know
that you will see results; good results.

Although Google Adwords comes highly rated and recommended,
there are also a number of disadvantages to using the program.
There are some individuals who claim that the Google does a poor
job of monitoring their advertisements, namely where they
appear. It has been reported that advertisements appear on web
pages that are unrelated to the advertisements that are being
shown. This is most commonly seen with blogs. With blogs,
posters regularly change the focus of their posts each day. This
often results in different keywords being used, which can make
it difficult for consistency.

As it was mentioned above, aside from Goggle Adwords, Yahoo
Search Marketing is the other most recommended pay per click
advertising program. As with Google Adwords, Yahoo Search
Marketing has a number of advantages and disadvantages. The
main disadvantage of using Yahoo Search Marketing is that it is
still a relatively new program; they recently started working
with affiliates. These affiliates will host your advertisements
on their web pages. While this is considered a disadvantage, it
can also work to your advantage. Having a relatively small
number of affiliates makes it easier for the affiliates and
their websites to be monitored.

One of the biggest advantages to using Yahoo Search Marketing
for pay per click advertising is results. For an example of
this, just visit www.yahoo.com and perform a standard internet
search. Unlike Google’s search results page, where sponsored
advertisements are only displayed on the right-hand side, Yahoo
has advertisements displayed on the right-hand side, the top,
and the bottom. This means that your advertisements will not
only appear on affiliate pages, but there is also a chance that
your advertisement can be seen before a searcher even visits a
website!

Although both Google Adwords and Yahoo Search Marketing have
their own unique advantages and disadvantages, it is important
to touch on what they have in common. Both programs only charge
you for your advertisements if a user clicks on one of them,
thus the name pay per click advertising. Both programs also
monitor what is known as click fraud. Click fraud is when your
advertisements are clicked on, maliciously, just to increase the
amount of money that you have to pay. If click fraud is found,
both Yahoo and Google will take care of the problem and you will
not be held financially responsible for those clicks.

Despite multiple disadvantages, both programs are great and they
both come highly rated and recommended. This may make it
difficult to choose which pay per click program you want to
join. While your first impulse may be to join both, you are
advised against doing so. Instead, you will want to try and put
all of your time and energy into one program and one alone. If,
by chance, you don’t receive the results that you were hoping
for you can experiment with your second choice.

Whether you choose to participate in Google Adwords or
Yahoo Search Marketing, you are sure to be pleased with the
results.

Finding Profitable Keywords with Google

If you’re an internet marketer, you know the secret of success is to find a niche market and then home in on the perfect keywords.

A niche market is a group of individuals with available money who share a common interest, problem, enthusiasm, need or mania and who can be easily found online.

For example, small plane owners comprise a niche market. Collectors of Grateful Dead memorabilia are a niche market. Members of the 101st Airborne form a niche market. People who build their own racing wheelchairs are a niche market. City dwellers approaching retirement to a rural area form another niche market.

It’s pretty easy to think up groups of people who share a common interest or have a common problem. What isn’t so easy is to discover which of the many potential markets will provide an entrepreneur the best monetary return for an investment of time and energy building a website and promoting it.

People who are forced to move suddenly are a niche market. They have a problem and they need a solution right now. They are looking for help. If you are an internet marketer, you want them to find YOU.

That’s where the Google Keyword tool can come in handy.

You need to have an Adwords account to make use of these tools, but an Adwords account is free until you run an ad. The tools are well worth the time to sign up.

Once you have an Adwords account at adwords.google.com, you can then proceed to adwords.google.com/select/Tools.

First, take a look at the “Keyword Tool.” You may want to prepare a list of keywords in a text file before you go to the Tools. Then you can simply cut and paste the list into the keyword tool box. Be sure to check the box “Use Synonyms” to get the most complete list of keyword suggestions.

For example, say you’d found some great affiliate programs for dog products, but know the main dog market is oversaturated with heavy competition. You’re looking for some nice niche markets where your products will still be big sellers, but the competition will be less. So you type the word “dogs” into the keyword tool.

128 keywords show on the returned list. Most of the major dog breeds are included, such as Pugs, Papillons, Corgis and Cockapoos. Owners of specific breeds may form markets you could pursue. And in addition, there are such prime niche markets as dog tags, dog crates, dog electric fence, dog insurance, dog costumes, dog medication, dog boarding, dog names, etc.

The only question is whether any of these niches has monetary value.

Your next step is to go to the drop down box near the top of the page and change “show columns” from “keywords only” to “keyword popularity.” You do not need to run the search again; the page display will change when you make your selection.

When you get your results, be sure to notice that at the bottom of the page is a link you can click to export your results to a spreadsheet like Excel, as well as looking at them on the webpage.

Now you will see one column which shows you how much competition there is for the keyword and another column showing how many people are looking for that term. The information is presented in nice graphical form so that with a glance you can really understand just how tough a market “dogs” really is. It is nearly totally saturated. Maybe you’d be better off into the ferret market, or pot bellied pigs. When you look closely, you see a possible opening in “heated dog beds” and when you look even more closely you can see a pattern emerging which might be useful. Electronic collars, electronic fences, heated dog bed, heated dog houses, etc. all show a slightly lower competition factor. Now all you need is the domain name ElectricDog.com and you’re ready to go. (Sorry, it’s already taken.)

But wait … there’s another option on the drop down box for “show columns”. Now set it to show you “Cost and position estimates” and set the value for “Calculate Values using Max CPC” to the maximum of $100. Click Recalculate.

The results you see show you how much people are bidding to be in the top 3 positions for an Adwords ad (which is also a good indicator of how much relatively you can make for the percentage of revenue Google pays for Adsense ads for the keyword used in your website’s articles and content.)

You immediately notice that electric dog fence is a $5.10 keyword, electronic dog door is $12.26, and electric dog collars is $5.20. At the same time, you notice an even smaller niche with great potential which you’d overlooked, “dog insurance” with a bid value of a whopping $15.38, but when you bounce back to the page with “keyword popularity” results, your excitement backs off a bit, because that keyword appears to be totally saturated. More research may be in order there, or perhaps simply an opportunity to add a few articles and garner some Adsense revenue.

So now you know a possible slot and you know that to promote it you may need to steer away from expensive Adwords ads in favor of other advertising, but you may be able to make good money from your site’s content through placing Adsense ads on your pages.

How to Succeed with Google Adwords

Google Adwords is the most sophisticated and popular pay-per-click advertising system on the internet. Unlike regular search engine listings, which are listed for free according to “relevance,” as defined by the particular search engine involved, Adwords are small text ads which usually appear to the right of the unpaid listings. Advertisers bid on specific “keywords”, which determines where the ad is displayed. However, unlike other search engines, where placement is completely determined by the amount of the bid, Google uses a complex calculation which also takes into the account the popularity of the ad as well. Thus, an ad which gets clicked on a lot can end up in a better position than one with a higher bid. That’s how Google rewards the ad for relevancy, so it pays to create an ad that will invite clicks.

Advertising with Adwords has many advantages. First, the ad is displayed immediately, as opposed to waiting for sites to show up in regular listings, which can take months. Second, they can be highly targeted, meaning you can make sure you’re only paying for clicks by customers who are sincerely interested. Third, Adwords allows you to run several ad campaigns simultaneously, so you can test the results and experiment on the fly to constantly improve the quality of the ads. You can even track the “conversion rate,” or the actual number of sales generated by a given ad. This is extremely precise marketing.

The first step is to come up with the best possible list of keywords. This is extremely important, because if you bid on the same ones everyone else is bidding on, you will end up with very expensive clicks. You can use any of the many keyword search tools available (wordtracker.com has a popular one) to determine which keywords have lots of searches but not too much competition. If you bid on enough low-cost keywords, you can do as well or better than if you had placed an expensive bid on a popular term. You can also place a limit on your budget, so that you can control how much your total expenditure is per month. You can also specify certain words you do not want included, so that you don’t attract a lot of clicks from people looking for something related that you don’t offer.

The ad itself consists of four lines: a title of no more than 25 characters, a description with two lines of up to 35 characters each, and a line for your url, also limited to 35 characters. The title is what really attracts attention. It should include the keyword you’re targeting, and should be as striking as possible so as to stand out from the crowd. If it’s truly attention-getting, it could end up getting more clicks than other, duller ads higher up on the page. Some suggest that it should be in all caps, and include a price if possible.

The description should include the major selling point of your product, and also include enough information to discourage clicks by unqualified customers. Make sure they know what you’re selling and what to expect, as well as what sets you apart from the competition.

Finally, make sure the URL listed takes them to the most relevant page in your site for what they’re looking for. Make sure the link is up to date and functioning correctly.

That’s it in a nutshell, although the nuances are quite a bit more complex than we can deal with here. Many resources are available on the net which go into greater detail. But now that you understand the basics, you should be armed with the information you need to explore one of the most potentially lucrative marketing tools on the internet.
