Customer Service and the Paid Membership Web Site
Home Business, Internet Marketing Articles, Small Business, Work from home June 25th, 2007Flexibility, and the ability to constantly adapt to changing market conditions, is an important part of any business. When it comes to running a Internet based business such as a paid membership web site, however, this flexibility and adaptability is an absolute must. If you cannot constantly update your site to give your paying members what they want, they will quickly find what they need elsewhere.
There is a great deal of profit to be made on the Internet, even now in this post dot.com bubble environment. The amount of money available, however, means that there is a great deal of competition for these limited dollars. That means that you need to strive to constantly stay better than your competition. Gaining and holding an edge on your competitors is essential to the long term success of any business, whether it is located on the Internet or in the brick and mortar world.
One way you can differentiate yourself from all the others is through your fulfillment services and customer service abilities. Customer service is an essential part of any business, but it is surprising how many web site owners have no solid plan for fulfillment and customer service in place when they plan their sites. It is important to work all this out before launching your site, however, since without top notch customer service your paid membership web site will flounder.
When building your web site initially, it is important to have the infrastructure in place to allow your customers to contact you if they have a question or need to solve a problem. The most important thing is to provide top notch, leading edge customer service each and every time. Every inquiry, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, should be answered promptly. You should strive to answer all email inquiries within 24 hours, preferably much faster.
If you are unable to provide a prompt response, at least send an automatic acknowledgement letting the customer or potential customer know that the inquiry has been received. Nothing is more frustrating than to send an email inquiry and not knowing if it has been received or will ever be answered. This is particularly frustrating for customers who are paying a subscription charge or membership fee.
Good customer service can be a valuable advertising tool, and it can provide that coveted word of mouth advertising that cannot be bought. Good word of mouth advertising must be earned, and outstanding customer service is one of the very best ways to earn it. Just as people warn their friends and family members about those businesses to avoid, they also tell their friends and family members when they have received outstanding customer service. Having your business discussed in such a positive light is a great way to retain the customers you have, and to draw more paying customers to your web site.
When starting your new paid membership web site, it is important to consider the infrastructure, and budget for the costs you will need to serve your customer base and help your paid membership base, and your profits, grow.
For a small startup Internet site, the startup costs are not very high, and if you are already a computer user you may already have some of the necessary web site infrastructure in place. For instance, two of the most important pieces of hardware for a paid membership web site are a good computer and a good desk and workspace from which to work. Chances are you already have a computer and a desk for your own use. It is true that you may need to upgrade to a more modern computer, especially if your computer is more than a few years old. Even so, a good computer can be had these days for under $1,000, and computer desks are a couple of hundred dollars or even less.
